From Workshop to National Champion: Kiamichi Tech’s Johnny Villages Builds His Dreams with SkillsUSA

McALESTER Okla. – Johnny Villages, a Construction Technology student at Kiamichi Tech – McAlester, has always loved working with his hands. But it wasn’t until he joined SkillsUSA that he discovered just how far his skills, determination, and passion for his trade could take him.
In 2024, Johnny stepped into the world of SkillsUSA competitions — a national organization that empowers students to become world-class workers and leaders in their fields. That year, he took first place at the regional level, showcasing his technical skills in carpentry and construction techniques. At the Oklahoma state competition, he earned a silver medal, finishing just four points shy of advancing to nationals. While many might have stopped there, Johnny used the experience as motivation to grow stronger.
“Johnny didn’t let that second-place finish discourage him,” said Ben Denny, Construction Technology instructor at Kiamichi Tech. “He came back with even more determination. His commitment to improving his craft and reaching his goals inspired everyone around him. He’s truly a goal getter.”
In 2025, Johnny returned to SkillsUSA with a clear mission: make it to nationals. He put in countless extra hours in the shop, perfecting everything from framing and layout to precise measurement and finish work. His focus wasn’t just on winning — it was about mastering his trade and building confidence in his abilities.
At the 2025 regional contest, Johnny once again earned first place, securing his chance to compete at state for the second time. This was his last opportunity to advance, and he knew the stakes were high. On competition day, he focused on every detail, from reading complex blueprints to executing each cut and joint with precision. His hard work paid off when he captured first place at state, finally earning his long-awaited spot at the national stage.
“When I didn’t make it to nationals the first time, it pushed me to train harder and really believe in myself,” Johnny shared. “This journey has helped me build not just technical skills but confidence, too. It taught me that if you put in the work, you can reach any goal.”
At the 2025 SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference in June, Johnny faced the best student builders from across the country. The competition demanded the highest level of craftsmanship and professionalism. Despite the intense pressure, Johnny stayed focused and gave it everything he had, right up to the final moment.
In the end, Johnny’s dedication and mastery of his trade earned him the gold medal — a national first-place finish that marks the pinnacle of his SkillsUSA journey.
While the medal and prizes are meaningful, Johnny says the real reward is the growth he experienced along the way.
“SkillsUSA taught me that hard work, determination, and never giving up are the keys to success — in competitions and in life,” he said.
Johnny Villages isn’t just learning to build structures at Kiamichi Tech — he’s building a future filled with confidence, leadership, and big dreams.
